Sakyamuni Buddha – The Enlightened One
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beyond the pain and pressures, the toil and tears of life, away from illusory scene of transience and impermanence, transcending loving and halting transistorizes of this world, is the Enlightened One, Sakyamuni, the Sage of the Sakyas, Gautama Buddha. Gautama has overcome the temptations of Mara and of his demons in their innumerable aspects, some terrifying, some monstrous and some voluptuous. The intense inner struggle of Gautama makes him an immediately human figure to us. Mara tries to break him even when he has attained complete enlightenment and tempts him to vanish into nirvana and leave mankind in darkness. The Buddha is serene and motionless. Gautam Buddha has passed the raging fury of illusory forms. The Sage is supremely Enlightened One, aware of the cause of suffering and of the way to attain liberation from them. Gautam Buddha calls the Earth Goddess to witness by his earth-touching gesture or bhumi-sparsha-mudra. The right hand stretches down to the earth, the palm inside and all fingers straight. By this gesture, Gautam Buddha destroys all the demons of the earth. While the right hand of the Buddha is in the gesture of touching the earth, his left hand holds the alms bowl. Gautam Buddha is seated with legs crossed in the lotus position or Padmasana, on a moon disk, placed on a lotus.

This beautiful 6” Sakyamuni Buddha Sculpture has his left hand extended in the Bhumisparsa gesture, the mudra of witness. His left hand lies in the lap with palm upward. This is the gesture of "touching the earth" or "calling the earth to witness," commemorating Buddha's victory over temptation by the demon Mara. Sakyamuni Buddha is seated on a Padmasana pedestal of lotus petals arranged in a row. This is one of the most popular portrayals of Sakyamuni – at the moment of his full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya.

Vairocana Buddha – The Origin of the Dhyani Buddhas
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The name Vairocana means "He Who is Like the Sun" or "the Radiating One." Vairocana represents either the integration of or the origin of the Dhyani Buddhas. His wisdom is the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu. The Dharmadhatu is the Realm of Truth, in which all things exist as they really are. Vairocana's wisdom is also referred to as the All-Pervading Wisdom of the Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya is the Body of the Law, or the absolute Buddha nature. Vairocana's transcendent wisdom reveals the realm of highest reality and overcomes the poison of ignorance, or delusion. His wisdom is considered to be the origin of or the total of all the wisdoms of the Dhyani Buddhas. Vairocana is usually located in the center of mandalas of the Dhyani Buddhas. His color is white, symbolizing a pure consciousness. Vairocana rules over the element of ether and embodies the Skandha of consciousness. In some systems, Vairocana is associated with the Skandha of form. His symbol is the Dharmachakra, the wheel of the Teaching, or the wheel of the Law. It denotes the teaching of the Buddha. Its eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path, which Gautama revealed in his first sermon after his enlightenment. This symbol is printed around the border of the lithograph. Vairocana's lotus throne is supported by the lion, symbol of courage, boldness and an eager, advancing spirit. Vairocana's Mudra is the Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of turning the wheel of the Teaching. Because he embodies the wisdom of all Buddhas, Vairocana's Bija is the universal sound Om.

In this 8” Vairocana Buddha Sculpture, Vairocana Buddha is shown in Dharmachakra Mudra (Dharma Wheel Teaching Gesture) which denotes the teaching of the Buddha. Its eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path, which Gautama revealed in his first sermon after his enlightenment.
