1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva of Boundless Compassion

Avalokiteshvara (Guan Yin in Chinese; Chenrezig in Tibetan; Kannon in Japanese) is the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Among the Bodhisattvas, it is Avalokiteshvara who has the largest number of forms and is perhaps the most venerated and most popular Buddhist deity. His sex, originally masculine, is sometimes considered feminine in China and Japan, although this discrimination is unsupported by any canonical text and was often considered in China and Japan as the 'mother of the human race' and, in this respect, worshipped in the form of a woman.
Among the 108 forms of Lokiteshvara, Avalokiteshvara is one who refuses to accept Nirvana since he considers such acceptance selfish in view of the ignorance of the great majority of the people who have not yet attained that stage. His sacrifice symbolizes infinite compassion (Karuna), sharing of mankinds misery, willingness to help those in distress. Avalokiteshvara holds in his hand the indestructible jewel. He is savior and protector from danger. So, his invocation (Mantra) OM MANI PADME HUM is found inscribed on rocks, loose stones, prayer wheels, etc.
Avalokiteshvara is known from very early in the development of the Mahayana doctrines and, until Buddhism disappeared from India, enjoyed great favor there. His cult passed from India to South-East Asia and Java, where it met with great success, and also in Nepal, Tibet (where he arrived with Buddhism and where King Srong - Tsong Gampo, 519-650, was considered to be his incarnation), and in China, from where he went on to Korea and Japan. All these countries imagined him in different forms according to their own temperaments and spirituality.
In this form, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva has eleven heads. There are three rows of three heads which are in the color of white (sambhogakaya), green (nirmanakaya), and red (dharmakaya). This represents the three principle aspects of buddhahood. Above these three rows are a blue wrathful face of Vajrapani and the red face of Amitabha. In this form, Avalokiteshvara has eight main hands. The two central hands are held in a cupped gesture symbolizing an attitude of homage (In some depiction, these two hands holds a wish fulfilling jewel). Another main hand is held in an open palm gesture symbolizing generosity. The other main hands hold five objects: a bow and arrow, lotus, vase, rosary, and eight spooked wheel. The bow and arrow represents bodhisattva's ability to aim at the heart of all beings. The vase contains the nectar of immortality. The lotus blossom represents enlightenment. The eight spooked wheel represents the Buddha's teaching. The aura around the painting represents his one thousand hands and symbolizing his inexhaustible compassion. In each of his hand, there is an eye (wisdom) in the center of the palm (skills) which symbolizes the union of wisdoms and skills. |

Semi wrathful in appearance, blue in colour, he has four faces, twenty four hands and two legs. The main face is blue, right red, left white and the back face is yellow. Each has three eyes and an open mouth with slightly bared fangs. The first set of eight hands is blue in color, second (middle) red and third (upper) yellow. The first pair of hands holds a vajra and bell crossed at the heart embracing the consort. The remaining right hands hold a sword, curved knife, trident, three arrows, vajra hook, damaru drum, hammer, wheel, spear, club and axe. The left hands hold a shield, katvanga staff, skullcup, bow, lasso, jewel, lotus, conch shell, mirror, vajra chains and the four-faced yellow head of Brahma. The Lord wears a long green scarf and a tiger skin as a lower garment. The consort, Vishvamata, is yellow, with four faces and eight hands. They are both adorned with crowns, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and various ornaments. The right leg of the Lord is straight and red, standing atop the figure of red Kamadeva. The left is bent and white, standing atop white Rudra. Above the layered discs of a white moon, red sun and dark blue Rahu (eclipse) they stand on a multi-colored lotus blossom seat wreathed by the circular orange rays of pristine awareness fire. |

Shakyamuni Buddha predicted that due to the inevitable degeneration of the times, his own teachings would last just four thousand years before disappearing from this world. People will grow more and more immoral and their lifespan will gradually decrease, as will their health, stature and fortune. While such delusions as miserliness, hatred and jealousy gain strength, the world will go through prolonged periods of famine, disease and continuous warfare until it eventually resembles a vast battlefield of graveyard. Thereupon Maitreya will appear, not in his fully evolved Buddha form, but as a person of regal bearing, very handsome and taller than those around him. On seeing this unusual being, people will be filled with wonder and faith, and will ask how he came to have such an attractive appearance. Maitreya will reply that this is due to his practice of patience, avoiding giving harm to others, and if others will also abide in love and tolerance, they could become similar to him.
Maitreya's appearance will mark a great turning point in the fortunes of this world. As more and more beings follow his example, their store of merit, and consequently their lifespan, will increase. Eventually people will live in health for such a long time that the sufferings of old age and death will scarcely be known. At that time, their observance of morality will grow lax as people become more and more involved in the pleasures of their existence. With this laxity will come another gradual shortening and degeneration of their lifespan until eventually beings once again will become suitable ripe to take sincere interest in the spiritual path. When the human lifespan as increased again to many thousands of years, and when the planet will be entirely dominated by a benevolent wheel turning sovereign (Chakravartin) named Shankha, it is at this time that Maitreya Buddha will descend from the Tushita Buddha field (devaloka) where he now resides, to appear in this world as the fifth founding Buddha of this world age. Maitreya will be born the son of a Brahmin priest, and will renounce the world and attain enlightenment in a single day, not requiring six long years. The world in this time will be politically neutralised, and therefore the warrior class and its martial virtues will be obsolete. Thus he will be born among the intellectuals, the priests, and his teaching will bring the gentler emotions to the fore. Maitreya Buddha is supposed to be passing the life of a Bodhisattva in the Tusita (Tushita) Heaven preparatory to his descent to earth in Human form. It is said that he will come to earth full 4000 years after the disappearance of Gautam Buddha for the deliverance all sentient beings. Maitreya may be represented as a standing figure adorned with rich ornaments and holding in his right hand the stalk of a lotus. Vajradhara The Primordial Buddha

Vajradhara is the primordial Buddha, the dharmakaya buddha. Vajradhara, depicted as dark blue in color, expresses the quintessence of buddhahood itself. Vajradhara represents the essence of the historical Buddha's realization of enlightenment. Historically, Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya over 2500 years ago and then manifested as the Buddha. According to Buddhist cosmology, he was the Fourth Historic Buddha of this fortunate eon. Prince Siddhartha's achievement of enlightenment, the realization, or wisdom of enlightenment itself, is called the dharmakaya, the body of truth. When he expresses that realization through subtle symbols, his realization is called the sambhogakaya, the body of enjoyment. When such realization manifested in more accessible or physical form for all sentient beings as the historical Shakyamuni Buddha, it is called the nirmanakaya, the body of manifestation.
The dharmakaya, synonymous with Vajradhara Buddha, is the source of all the manifestations of enlightenment. Vajradhara is central to the Kagyu lineage because Tilopa received the vajrayana teachings directly from Vajradhara, the dharmakaya buddha. Thus, the Kargyudpa lineage originated from the very nature of buddhahood. The Kargyudpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism begins with the Buddha Vajradhara. The individual in this tradition is allowed to visualize his root Guru as Buddha Vajradhara. Guru Tilopa is said to have received Mahamudra instruction directly from Budhda Vajradhara through visions and other extraordinary means. In Nispannayogavali, Vajradhara is the main deity in Vajrasattvamandala. Vajradhara is three faced, six armed and reddish white in color. Shakyamuni Buddha The Enlightened One

Beyond the pain and pressures, the toil and tears of life, away from illusory scene of transience and impermanence, transcending loving and halting transitoriness of this world, is the Enlightened One, Shakyamuni, the Sage of the Sakyas, Gautama Buddha. Gautama has overcome the temptations of Mara and of his demons in their innumerable aspects, some terrifying, some monstrous and some voluptuous. The intense inner struggle of Gautama makes him an immediately human figure to us. Mara tries to break him even when he has attained complete enlightenment and tempts him to vanish into nirvana and leave mankind in darkness. The Buddha is serene and motionless. Gautam Buddha has passed the raging fury of illusory forms. The Sage is supremely Enlightened One, aware of the cause of suffering and of the way to attain liberation from them. Gautam Buddha calls the Earth Goddess to witness by his earth-touching gesture or bhumi-sparsha-mudra. The right hand stretches down to the earth, the palm inside and all fingers straight. By this gesture, Gautam Buddha destroys all the demons of the earth. While the right hand of the Buddha is in the gesture of touching the earth, his left hand holds the alms bowl. Gautam Buddha is seated with legs crossed in the lotus position or Padmasana, on a moon disk, placed on a lotus.

Amitabha Buddha THE BUDDHA OF INFINITE LIGHT

Amitabha means "Infinite Light." Amitabha's Discriminating Wisdom conquers the poison of the passions all cravings, covetousness, greed and lust. With this wisdom, the disciple discerns all beings separately yet knows every being as an individual expression of the One. In the mandala of the Dhyani Buddhas, Amitabha is positioned to the west. His color is rose (red), the color of the setting sun. Amitabha Buddha rules over the element of fire and personifies the Skandha of perception. Thus, the eye and the faculty of seeing are associated with Amitabha. The peacock, with "eyes" on its plumes, is his throne-bearer. The peacock symbolizes grace. Amitabha's symbol is the padma, or lotus, placed between him and Vairochana in this Mandala. In Buddhism, the lotus can symbolize many things, including spiritual enfoldment, purity, the true nature of beings realized through enlightenment, and compassion, the purified form of passion. Amitabha denotes "Boundless Light" or Incomprehensible.
Devotees aspire to be reborn in Amitabha's Western Paradise, known as Sukhavati, where conditions are ideal for attaining enlightenment. His mudra is the dhyana (meditation) mudra. His bija is Hrih and his mantra is Om Amitabha Hrih. Some consider Amitabha to be synonymous with Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life. Others honor Amitayus as a form of Amitabha or as a separate Buddha.
