Ekajati – The Dharma Protector

The name Ekajati literally means "one whose hair is arranged in single chignon." Ekajati is most often portrayed as a ferocious goddess, her awesomeness being emphasized by the pronounced and only eye in the center of the forehead.

Ekajati is also known as Ugra – Tara, 'Ugra,' meaning wrathful in Sanskrit. Ekajati is believed to be the most powerful goddess in the Vajrayana pantheon, and merely listening to the chants of her mantra destroys all obstacles, brings good luck and intense religious enjoyment.

Dark and menacing, flame – inhaled, and nearly naked, Ekajati's face contorts with fury. From her ugly mouth, a single fang protrudes. Ekajati has only one drooping breast hanging down chest, and her hips are covered with a tiger – skin. A long necklace of severed human heads adorns her body. In her right hand Ekajati waves an impaled and upright human corpse. With her left hand Ekajati dispatches a female wolf messenger. Ekajati stands in the 'Pratyalidha' or warrior pose.

Ekajati is the supreme protectress of the Nyingmapa practices. Ekajati also functions as guardian of mantras – preventing them from being disclosed to those unworthy to use them, and ensuring that those who have been empowered to use them do so for appropriate purposes. Ekajati guards them in a more general sense as well, preventing them from losing their power and efficacy, or from being lost altogether.

Green Tara – THE PROTECTRESS

Green Tara is regarded as spiritual consort of Amoghasiddhi, the Dhyani Buddha. Green Tara is portrayed similar to that of the White Tara. One can find the difference only in her left hand which holds a half – closed lotus or water – lily flower with long petals which is often blue. In the Lamaeist Tradition, Tara is incarnated in all good women. Green Tara is also to have mortal base in historic persons of the Nepali and Chinese princess who married the great king Srong – Tsong Gampo and credited with the introduction of Buddhism to Tibet and China. Green Tara vowed "until Samsara is empty, I shall work for benefit of sentient beings in a woman's body". Green Tara is worshipped, because she brings all good women.

Vairocana Buddha – The Origin of the Dhyani Buddhas

The name Vairochana means "He Who is Like the Sun" or "the Radiating One." Vairochana represents either the integration of or the origin of the Dhyani Buddhas. His wisdom is the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu. The Dharmadhatu is the Realm of Truth, in which all things exist as they really are. Vairocana's wisdom is also referred to as the All-Pervading Wisdom of the Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya is the Body of the Law, or the absolute Buddha nature. Vairochana's transcendent wisdom reveals the realm of highest reality and overcomes the poison of ignorance, or delusion. His wisdom is considered to be the origin of or the total of all the wisdoms of the Dhyani Buddhas. Vairochana is usually located in the center of mandalas of the Dhyani Buddhas. His color is white, symbolizing a pure consciousness. Vairochana rules over the element of ether and embodies the Skandha of consciousness. In some systems, Vairochana is associated with the Skandha of form. His symbol is the Dharmachakra, the wheel of the Teaching, or the wheel of the Law. It denotes the teaching of the Buddha. Its eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path, which Gautama revealed in his first sermon after his enlightenment. This symbol is printed around the border of the lithograph. Vairocana's lotus throne is supported by the lion, symbol of courage, boldness and an eager, advancing spirit. Vairochana's Mudra is the Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of turning the wheel of the Teaching. Because he embodies the wisdom of all Buddhas, Vairochana's Bija is the universal sound Om.

Kalachakra a non – dual Tantra retrieved from the hidden kingdom of Shambala. Semi – wrathful in appearance, blue in color, he has four faces, twenty – four hands and two legs. The main face is blue, right red, left white and the back face is yellow. Each has three eyes and an open mouth with slightly bared fangs. The first pair of hands holds a Vajra and bell crossed at the heart embracing the consort. The remaining right hands hold a sword, curved knife, trident, three arrows, Vajra hook, Damaru drum, hammer, wheel, spear, club and axe. The left hands hold a shield, Katvanga staff, skull cup, bow, lasso, jewel, lotus, conch shell, mirror, Vajra chains and the four – faced yellow head of Brahma. Kalachakra an enlightenment aspect of Buddha ship, which embodies the highest insights of all six elements: the zodiac signs as well as the planets of our solar system (including the moon – nodes Rahu and Ketu). This astrology related Buddha – aspect (divided into the 'inner', secret Kalachakra and the 'outer' Kalachakra of more exoteric interpretation) is seen as the highest Tibetan Tantra deity with the most subtle accompanying teachings. The Lord wears a long scarf and a tiger skin as a lower garment. The consort, Vishvamata, is yellow, with four faces and eight hands. They are both adorned with crowns, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and various ornaments. The right leg of the Lord is straight, standing atop the figure of Kamadeva. The left is bent, standing atop Rudra. Above the layered discs of a white moon, red sun and dark blue Rahu (eclipse) they stand on a multi-colored lotus blossom seat wreathed by the circular orange rays of pristine awareness fire.

Aparmita – THE BUDDHA OF INFINITE LIGHT

Aparmita is the name given to Amitabha in his character of bestower of longevity. Aparmita may be turned either a “Crowned Buddha or a Bodhisattva and is therefore richly clad and wears the thirteen ornaments. His hair is painted blue and falls on either side to his elbows or may be curiously coiled. Aparmita is seated like Buddha and his hands lie on his lap in Dhyana Mudra holding the ambrosia vase, his special emblem. The vase is richly decorated and from the cover fall four strings of beads which represent sacred pills. In the preliminary worship, the pills made from buttered dough and the ambrosia brewed from spirit or beer and offered in a skull bowl to the great image of Aparmita. The lama then places a vajra on the ambrosia vase, which the image of Amitayus holds in its lap, and applies a cord, which is attached to the vajra, his own heart. The wine in the ambrosia vase is then consecrated and the people partake of it as well as of the sacred pills with the firm conviction that there lives will be prolonged through their faith in Aparmita.

Chenrezig – The Buddha of Compassion

Chenrezig is an enlightened being who is a manifestation of all Buddhas' compassion. Chenrezig is known the 'Buddha of Compassion'. Chenrezig usually appears as white in color with four arms. His first two hands are pressed together at his heart, symbolizing his respect for his Spiritual Guide, Buddha Amitabha, who is on his crown. Even though Chenrezig is an enlightened being he still shows respect to his Spiritual Guide. His first two hands hold a jewel, which symbolizes his own enlightenment. This mudra is indicating 'I attained jewel-like great enlightenment through receiving blessings from my Spiritual Guide Amitabha'.

His second left hand holds a white lotus flower. A lotus grows in the mud at the bottom of a lake, but its flowers bloom on the surface of the water, completely free from the stains of mud. By holding a lotus flower Chenrezig is showing that because he attained enlightenment he is free from all obstacles, and has a completely pure body, speech and mind. His second right hand holds a crystal mala, symbolizing that he can free all living beings from samsara and lead them to liberation. If we rely sincerely upon Chenrezig and recite his mantra with strong faith, temporarily we shall improve our realizations of the stages of the path, especially our realization of great compassion, and ultimately we shall attain supreme Buddhahood in Avalokiteshvara's Pure Land, the Pure Land of Bliss.

In this form, Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig is shown in his popular posture. Chenrezig usually appears as white in color with four arms. Vajrasattva – The Sixth Dhyani Buddha

Vajrasattva, the sixth Dhyani Buddha, is regarded as the priest of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. Vajrasattva is the Buddha of Purification. Vajrasattva is not represented in the stupa like other Dhyani Buddhas, but independent shrines are dedicated to his worship. Vajrasattva wears all ornaments, rich dress and a crown. Vajrasattva is white in color. Vajrasattva sits cross legged in the meditative pose like other Dhyani Buddhas. Vajrasattva always carries the vajra in his right hand with palm upwards against the chest and ghanta (bell) in the left hand resting upon the left thigh. As the "work" or Karma protector, Vajrasattva also manifests the energies of all Buddhas. Any practice of Vajrasattva is related to the practices of confession and purification as present in all Buddhist traditions.

This 8.75” is shown in white, signifying his immaculate purity in Dhyana asana. Vajrasattva right hand holds the vajra at the level of his heart while his left hand clasps the bell. The bell is said to symbolize wisdom and the vajra signifies the means of utilizing this wisdom. Together the vajra and the bell symbolize the fusion of all polarities, including masculine and feminine qualities, in one Enlightened experience.

Amitabha means "Infinite Light." Amitabha's Discriminating Wisdom conquers the poison of the passions – all cravings, covetousness, greed and lust. With this wisdom, the disciple discerns all beings separately yet knows every being as an individual expression of the One. In the mandala of the Dhyani Buddhas, Amitabha is positioned to the west. His color is rose (red), the color of the setting sun. Amitabha Buddha rules over the element of fire and personifies the Skandha of perception. Thus, the eye and the faculty of seeing are associated with Amitabha. The peacock, with "eyes" on its plumes, is his throne-bearer. The peacock symbolizes grace. Amitabha's symbol is the padma, or lotus, placed between him and Vairochana in this Mandala. In Buddhism, the lotus can symbolize many things, including spiritual enfoldment, purity, the true nature of beings realized through enlightenment, and compassion, the purified form of passion. Amitabha denotes "Boundless Light" or Incomprehensible.

Devotees aspire to be reborn in Amitabha's Western Paradise, known as Sukhavati, where conditions are ideal for attaining enlightenment. His mudra is the dhyana (meditation) mudra. His bija is Hrih and his mantra is Om Amitabha Hrih. Some consider Amitabha to be synonymous with Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life. Others honor Amitayus as a form of Amitabha or as a separate Buddha.
