Stupa or Chorten – The Basis of Offering

Stupa (Chorten in Tibetan which means "the basis of offering") is an important religious monument in Tibet. This unique religious architectural form expresses significant religious symbolism and presents Buddha's physical presence. It generally consists of three parts; a whitewashed base, a whitewashed cylinder and a crowning steeple or shaft. The square base foundation, representing the Buddha's lotus throne, symbolizes earth, the state of solidity and five forces (faith, concentration, mindfulness, perseverance and wisdom.) The four stepped base may or may not have openings. Above the base is a square or hexagon four stepped pedestal which represents The Buddha's crossed legs. Seated on the base is the cylinder, representing his torso. This symbolizes water, the state of fluidity and seven essential conditions of enlightenment: concentration, effort, equanimity, flexibility, mindfulness, joy and wisdom. Sometimes a Stupa has a shield like grillwork in one face. This allows relics of high lamas, statues and other items to be put inside. Between the cylinder and the crowning steeple, three is a square box, called Harmika, which represents the Buddha's eyes. It is considered to be the residence of the gods, symbolizing the eightfold noble path. The crowning steeple, the Buddha's crown, is usually hand - made of brass and/or covered with gold leaf. It is segmented into 13 tapering rings, a parasol and a twin symbol of the Sun and the Moon. Those rings, representing fire and the thirteen steps of enlightenment, successively symbolize ten powers of the Buddha and three close contemplations. The stylized parasol, representing wind, wards off all evil. At the top of the steeple is the twin symbol of the Sun and the Moon, which represent wisdom and method respectively. A flaming jewel may be found on the top of the twin symbol, symbolizing the highest enlightenment.

A Stupa is a tower or steeple erected atop Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist temples. The Stupa is a symbol for the elementary organization of the universe according to Hindu cosmology. Each spire or step represents a heaven, the uppermost protion being a point which is supposed to be the highest peak of Mount Sumeru, a mythical mountain whence the Bodhichitta loses itself in sunya. It is composed of four parts (from the base, up), symbolizing the five tattwas, or elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. On the four sides of the Stupa or Chaitya the figures of four Dhyani Buddhas; Akshobhya, Ratna Sambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi are placed. The place of Vairochana is in the centre. Padmasambhava – The Precious Master

Padmasambhava also Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master — is revered throughout the Himalayan ranges as a Second Buddha. Invited from India in the eighth century to subjugate the forces inhibiting the spread of Shakyamuni's teachings, Padmasambhava managed to transform hitherto hostile powers into guardians and protectors of the pure dharma and, in the process, left an indelible mark on the entire Himalayan region. In quite a literal sense, Padmasambhava's mark is to be found throughout the Himalayan ranges in and around the many caves Padmasambhava used for meditation. At these sites one can still see handprints and footprints of the Precious Master impressed into solid rock, mute testimony to the extraordinary power this fully accomplished yogi and tantric magician exercised over the external and internal elements. Now, in the pure depth of the heavens, Vajrasattva, allowing the Metamorphic Body to be seen, seared upon an elephant, holding a golden vajra to his heart with his right hand, and with his left hand holding a silver bell at his side, crowned with the ornaments of the Five Transcendent Buddhas, his body covered with all the perfect ornaments, decorated with bones at the shoulders, at the wrists, and at the ankles, brilliant with the white glitter of crystal. Perfectly learned in the Mahayoga, Vajrasattva reveals as a dwelling the celestial palace of the three Baskets, reveals as gods and goddesses the whole internal essence, reveals as Mantra the entire murmur of the words, reveals as enchantments everything which is of body, speech, and mind. And Padmasambhava sets forth the Tantras of the Mahayoga, which are, according to the whole classification, five hundred thousand, and the whole of which forms the eighteen root Tantras.
In this 13” Padmasambhava Sculpture, Padmasambhava embodies the ultimate attainment of the Vajrayana and the power, both temporal and spiritual, associated with this peerless attainment. These powerful attributes show Padmasambhava wearing an expression of great force and concentration while holding various implements of power such as the Vajra scepter, skull – cup and trident staff called Kathvanga. His right hand brandishes a Vajra, while the left hand, resting on his lap, supports the Vase of immortality. Padmasambhava is dressed not only in the robes of a monk but also in the garments of a king to indicate that Padmasambhava is a member of both worldly and religious royalty. |

Sakyamuni Buddha – The Enlightened One

Beyond the pain and pressures, the toil and tears of life, away from illusory scene of transience and impermanence, transcending loving and halting transistorizes of this world, is the Enlightened One, Sakyamuni, the Sage of the Sakyas, Gautama Buddha. Gautama has overcome the temptations of Mara and of his demons in their innumerable aspects, some terrifying, some monstrous and some voluptuous. The intense inner struggle of Gautama makes him an immediately human figure to us. Mara tries to break him even when he has attained complete enlightenment and tempts him to vanish into nirvana and leave mankind in darkness. The Buddha is serene and motionless. Gautam Buddha has passed the raging fury of illusory forms. The Sage is supremely Enlightened One, aware of the cause of suffering and of the way to attain liberation from them. Gautam Buddha calls the Earth Goddess to witness by his earth-touching gesture or bhumi-sparsha-mudra. The right hand stretches down to the earth, the palm inside and all fingers straight. By this gesture, Gautam Buddha destroys all the demons of the earth. While the right hand of the Buddha is in the gesture of touching the earth, his left hand holds the alms bowl. Gautam Buddha is seated with legs crossed in the lotus position or Padmasana, on a moon disk, placed on a lotus.
This beautiful 5” Sakyamuni Buddha Sculpture has his left hand extended in the Bhumisparsa gesture, the mudra of witness. His left hand lies in the lap with palm upward. This is the gesture of "touching the earth" or "calling the earth to witness," commemorating Buddha's victory over temptation by the demon Mara. Sakyamuni Buddha is seated on a Padmasana pedestal of lotus petals arranged in a row. This is one of the most popular portrayals of Sakyamuni – at the moment of his full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya. |

Manjushri – Bodhisattva of Wisdom

Manjushri is known as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom and is the bodhisattva counterpart to Adi Buddha (Thogmai Sangye), the Primordial Buddha. Manjushri is the tutelary deity of astrology and generally the protector of students. Manjushri is often considered to be the Buddha's incarnate wisdom. In his right hand Manjushri holds the flaming double sword of analytic discrimination to annihilate ignorance, the fundamental cause of cyclic existence and suffering. The left hand holds a blue lotus surmounted by the book of transcendent wisdom, the Prajnaparamita sutra. Manjushri is surrounded by over a hundred similar golden manifestations, symbolizing the universality of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Manjushri, whose worship confers mastery of the Dharma and he is considered the founder of Kathmandu. Originally, the Kathmandu valley was a lake where Vipaswi Buddha threw some lotus seeds. One of these seeds grew into a thousand petalled lotus flower from which shone a five colored light representing the five Buddhas. With his flaming sword of wisdom, Manjushri cut through the valley walls and the light came to rest on the peak at Swayambhu.

Vajrasattva – The Sixth Dhyani Buddha

Vajrasattva, the sixth Dhyani Buddha, is regarded as the priest of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. Vajrasattva is the Buddha of Purification. Vajrasattva is not represented in the stupa like other Dhyani Buddhas, but independent shrines are dedicated to his worship. Vajrasattva wears all ornaments, rich dress and a crown. Vajrasattva is white in color. Vajrasattva sits cross legged in the meditative pose like other Dhyani Buddhas. Vajrasattva always carries the vajra in his right hand with palm upwards against the chest and ghanta (bell) in the left hand resting upon the left thigh. As the "work" or Karma protector, Vajrasattva also manifests the energies of all Buddhas. Any practice of Vajrasattva is related to the practices of confession and purification as present in all Buddhist traditions.
This beautiful 9” is shown in white, signifying his immaculate purity in Dhyana asana. Vajrasattva right hand holds the vajra at the level of his heart while his left hand clasps the bell. The bell is said to symbolize wisdom and the vajra signifies the means of utilizing this wisdom. Together the vajra and the bell symbolize the fusion of all polarities, including masculine and feminine qualities, in one Enlightened experience. |
