Chenrezig The Buddha of Compassion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chenrezig is an enlightened being who is a manifestation of all Buddhas' compassion. Chenrezig is known the 'Buddha of Compassion'. Chenrezig usually appears as white in color with four arms. His first two hands are pressed together at his heart, symbolizing his respect for his Spiritual Guide, Buddha Amitabha, who is on his crown. Even though Chenrezig is an enlightened being he still shows respect to his Spiritual Guide. His first two hands hold a jewel, which symbolizes his own enlightenment. This mudra is indicating 'I attained jewel-like great enlightenment through receiving blessings from my Spiritual Guide Amitabha'.
His second left hand holds a white lotus flower. A lotus grows in the mud at the bottom of a lake, but its flowers bloom on the surface of the water, completely free from the stains of mud. By holding a lotus flower Chenrezig is showing that because he attained enlightenment he is free from all obstacles, and has a completely pure body, speech and mind. His second right hand holds a crystal mala, symbolizing that he can free all living beings from samsara and lead them to liberation. If we rely sincerely upon Chenrezig and recite his mantra with strong faith, temporarily we shall improve our realizations of the stages of the path, especially our realization of great compassion, and ultimately we shall attain supreme Buddhahood in Avalokiteshvara's Pure Land, the Pure Land of Bliss.
In this form, Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig is shown in his popular posture. |

Maitreya Buddha The Future Buddha
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maitreya Buddha is a future Buddha who is expected to come to earth from Tusita (Tushita) Heaven. Shakyamuni Buddha predicted that due to the inevitable degeneration of the times, his own teachings would last just four thousand years before disappearing from this world. People will grow more and more immoral and their lifespan will gradually decrease, as will their health, stature and fortune. While such delusions as miserliness, hatred and jealousy gain strength, the world will go through prolonged periods of famine, disease and continuous warfare until it eventually resembles a vast battlefield of graveyard. Thereupon Maitreya will appear, not in his fully evolved Buddha form, but as a person of regal bearing, very handsome and taller than those around him. On seeing this unusual being, people will be filled with wonder and faith, and will ask how he came to have such an attractive appearance. Maitreya will reply that this is due to his practice of patience, avoiding giving harm to others, and if others will also abide in love and tolerance, they could become similar to him.
Maitreya's appearance will mark a great turning point in the fortunes of this world. As more and more beings follow his example, their store of merit, and consequently their lifespan, will increase. Eventually people will live in health for such a long time that the sufferings of old age and death will scarcely be known. At that time, their observance of morality will grow lax as people become more and more involved in the pleasures of their existence. With this laxity will come another gradual shortening and degeneration of their lifespan until eventually beings once again will become suitable ripe to take sincere interest in the spiritual path. When the human lifespan as increased again to many thousands of years, and when the planet will be entirely dominated by a benevolent wheel turning sovereign (Chakravartin) named Shankha, it is at this time that Maitreya Buddha will descend from the Tushita Buddha field (devaloka) where he now resides, to appear in this world as the fifth founding Buddha of this world age. Maitreya will be born the son of a Brahmin priest, and will renounce the world and attain enlightenment in a single day, not requiring six long years. The world in this time will be politically neutralised, and therefore the warrior class and its martial virtues will be obsolete. Thus he will be born among the intellectuals, the priests, and his teaching will bring the gentler emotions to the fore. Maitreya Buddha is supposed to be passing the life of a Bodhisattva in the Tusita (Tushita) Heaven preparatory to his descent to earth in Human form. It is said that he will come to earth full 4000 years after the disappearance of Gautam Buddha for the deliverance all sentient beings. Maitreya may be represented as a standing figure adorned with rich ornaments and holding in his right hand the stalk of a lotus. Maitreya may also be represented seated as a Buddha, with legs either interlocked or dangling down. His color is yellow, and his images sometimes bear the figures of Dhyani Buddhas.
This 10.2 Maitreya Buddha Sculpture seated on a throne western style holding in his right hand the stalk of a lotus, his color is yellow and venerated both in Mahayana and Hinayana Buddhism. |

Padmasambhava The Precious Master
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Padmasambhava also Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master is revered throughout the Himalayan ranges as a Second Buddha. Invited from India in the eighth century to subjugate the forces inhibiting the spread of Shakyamuni's teachings, Padmasambhava managed to transform hitherto hostile powers into guardians and protectors of the pure dharma and, in the process, left an indelible mark on the entire Himalayan region. In quite a literal sense, Padmasambhava's mark is to be found throughout the Himalayan ranges in and around the many caves Padmasambhava used for meditation. At these sites one can still see handprints and footprints of the Precious Master impressed into solid rock, mute testimony to the extraordinary power this fully accomplished yogi and tantric magician exercised over the external and internal elements. Now, in the pure depth of the heavens, Vajrasattva, allowing the Metamorphic Body to be seen, seared upon an elephant, holding a golden vajra to his heart with his right hand, and with his left hand holding a silver bell at his side, crowned with the ornaments of the Five Transcendent Buddhas, his body covered with all the perfect ornaments, decorated with bones at the shoulders, at the wrists, and at the ankles, brilliant with the white glitter of crystal. Perfectly learned in the Mahayoga, Vajrasattva reveals as a dwelling the celestial palace of the three Baskets, reveals as gods and goddesses the whole internal essence, reveals as Mantra the entire murmur of the words, reveals as enchantments everything which is of body, speech, and mind. And Padmasambhava sets forth the Tantras of the Mahayoga, which are, according to the whole classification, five hundred thousand, and the whole of which forms the eighteen root Tantras.
In this 9 Padmasambhava Sculpture, Padmasambhava embodies the ultimate attainment of the Vajrayana and the power, both temporal and spiritual, associated with this peerless attainment. These powerful attributes show Padmasambhava wearing an expression of great force and concentration while holding various implements of power such as the Vajra scepter, skull cup and trident staff called Kathvanga. His right hand brandishes a Vajra, while the left hand, resting on his lap, supports the Vase of immortality. Padmasambhava is dressed not only in the robes of a monk but also in the garments of a king to indicate that Padmasambhava is a member of both worldly and religious royalty. |

Shakyamuni Buddha The Enlightened One
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beyond the pain and pressures, the toil and tears of life, away from illusory scene of transience and impermanence, transcending loving and halting transistorizes of this world, is the Enlightened One, Sakyamuni, the Sage of the Sakyas, Gautama Buddha. Gautama has overcome the temptations of Mara and of his demons in their innumerable aspects, some terrifying, some monstrous and some voluptuous. The intense inner struggle of Gautama makes him an immediately human figure to us. Mara tries to break him even when he has attained complete enlightenment and tempts him to vanish into nirvana and leave mankind in darkness. The Buddha is serene and motionless. Gautam Buddha has passed the raging fury of illusory forms. The Sage is supremely Enlightened One, aware of the cause of suffering and of the way to attain liberation from them. Gautam Buddha calls the Earth Goddess to witness by his earth-touching gesture or bhumi-sparsha-mudra. The right hand stretches down to the earth, the palm inside and all fingers straight. By this gesture, Gautam Buddha destroys all the demons of the earth. While the right hand of the Buddha is in the gesture of touching the earth, his left hand holds the alms bowl. Gautam Buddha is seated with legs crossed in the lotus position or Padmasana, on a moon disk, placed on a lotus.
This beautiful 9 Sakyamuni Buddha Sculpture has his left hand extended in the Bhumisparsa gesture, the mudra of witness. His left hand lies in the lap with palm upward. This is the gesture of "touching the earth" or "calling the earth to witness," commemorating Buddha's victory over temptation by the demon Mara. Sakyamuni Buddha is seated on a Padmasana pedestal of lotus petals arranged in a row. This is one of the most popular portrayals of Sakyamuni at the moment of his full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya. |

Vajrapani Wielder of the Thunderbolt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vajrapani is the embodiment of power of Lord Buddhas compassion. Vajrapani is always depicted in wrathful aspect. Vajrapanis body is blue in color and his hair having yellow ochre. Vajrapani wears a tiger skin around his waist and is usually depicted in two arms aspect but can be seen in four arms aspect too. Vajrapani is a major Bodhisattva easily recognized as holding vajra with his right hand and left hand displaying threatening vitarka mudra. His body seems to be massive and in a pose of warrior. Under his feet he controls two live snakes. Vajrapani wears all sorts of bodhisattva ornaments and also a garland of snakes. He has a wide and wild roaring mouth rimmed with lacquered red lips. His eyebrows are like the flame and moustache and beard being curled.
Vajrapani is often depicted with Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri representing Buddhas power of compassion (Vajrapani), the great compassion (Avalokiteshvara) and the great wisdom (Manjushri). Vajrapanis wrathfulness, snake ornament and his pose as warrior all serve to convey the force and vitality of the enlightened energy as it combats ignorance, greed, fear and other delusions. Vajrapani is said to be the companion Bodhisattva of Buddha Shakyamuni. While Buddha was residing at Gridhkuta hill, the site where Lord Buddha delivered Prajnaparamita doctrines, his jealous cousin Devadutt attempted to assassinate him. He sent a huge boulder rolling down the hill, but just as it was about to hit Buddha, Vajrapani appeared and split the boulder into pieces so that it could fall harmlessly near Buddha. Another story is that a Brahman called Ambattha was abusing Buddha with many vile and impure words. He saw Vajrapani appeared on the sky with his wrathful aspect. Terrified with Vajrapani, Brahman Ambattha confessed his evil deeds in front of Buddha Shakyamuni.
This beautiful 8.5 Vajrapani is depicted in wrathful aspect. Vajrapanis body is blue in color and his hair having yellow ochre.
